VÄLLINGBY

As part of a development plan for Vällingby in Stockholm, the idea is to incorporate individual row houses - a row house solution where all designs are unique. However, as a complement to the totally individual projects, some ready designs would be available to choose from. We had two different sites to react to, and the program included a home-business space on each ground floor. We aimed at a generality-of-space approach to reach a flexibility that we find lacking in new Swedish developments, but which is very high in demand on the Swedish market. We are talking pre-modernism, when spaces were less tailor-made for each specific purpose. Injecting some of that set of ideas into a row house, we found a freedom that could suit different sizes of families, collectives, or other constellations yet to be invented.
